Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Castledermot (Kildare) School.

Seán Power

Question:

116 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education if she will now permit Scoil Diarmada mixed national school, Castledermot, County Kildare, to retain its current quota of teaching staff following the recent visit of a Department inspector to the school. [14803/96]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolment of Scoil Diarmada on 30 September 1995 was 185 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and five assistant teachers for the 1996-97 school year. In addition, the school has the services of a shared remedial teacher.

The managerial authorities of Scoil Diarmada appealed the decision to suppress the sixth assistant's post. The basis of the appeal was the specific accommodation difficulties which were stated to exist at the school.

In response to the appeal, an inspector's report was commissioned. The report indicates that the school's enrolment can be managed within the existing accommodation. In the circumstances, the appeal was rejected.
