Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Robert Molloy

Question:

148 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has, from a staffing and accommodation point of view, for the care of males at St. Vincent's, Navan Road, Dublin 7. [15097/96]

The provision of services for persons with a mental handicap in the Dublin region is a matter in the first instance for the Eastern Health Board.

The Daughters of Charity have traditionally provided residential and day services for females at three centres in north County Dublin i.e. St. Vincent's, Navan Road, St. Joseph's, Clonsilla; and Holy Angels, Glenmaroon. While the Order has developed residential services in recent years for male clients, the number of places available to this group is still limited. However, respite and other support services are provided by the board to this client group.
The Eastern Health Board, in conjunction with the Order, has examined the needs of this client group as part of the overall service needs of north County Dublin and included proposals to meet these needs in their regional five-year development plans.
The regional development plans will form the basis for the overall development plan which my Department is preparing and which I expect to be ready later this year.
