Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Administration of Medication.

John Browne

Question:

169 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure that any nurse administering medication strictly in accordance with policy guidelines (details supplied) is not acting in contravention of An Bord Altranais guidelines relating to the administration of medication. [15356/96]

Limerick East): Nursing is a self-regulating profession and it is a matter for each nurse in the first instance to ensure that all aspects of his or her practice conform to professional standards. As part of their employment contract nurses are expected to observe any agreed policy guidelines in force in their place of employment.

My Department is currently in consulation with An Bord Altranais concerning the application of its Guidance to Nurses and Midwives on the Administration of Medical Preparations, particularly in relation to the impact on the delivery of mental health services at local level.
