Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

171 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Health the help currently available to individuals who rely on social welfare payments but have a child on the lower half of the 1,121 waiting list for orthodontic treatment in Letterkenny General Hospital, County Donegal, and who have decided to receive and pay for the treatment in Derry. [15387/96]

Limerick East): The North-Western Health Board does not accept responsibility for, or pay a grant towards any orthodontic treatment which is obtained by private arrangement.

The North-Western Health Board provides orthodontic treatment services through a consultant orthodontist and dental support staff employed by the board. Children are assessed in sixth class in national school in accordance with guidelines laid down by my Department and placed on a waiting list for treatment. Treatment is provided when the child's name is reached on the waiting list.
