Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Advertising of Office of Public Works Positions.

John Ellis

Question:

286 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the current position regarding the advertising of supervisory positions within the Office of Public Works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15272/96]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the heritage service, which was formerly part of the Office of Public Works and now comes within my own Department.

The position is that supervisory positions within the industrial workforce of the heritage service are, at some locations, advertised internally and applications are invited from among eligible workers in accordance with union agreements. At other locations, positions are not advertised but are offered to the most senior and most suitable workers in line with custom and practice or according to local union agreements.

Supervisory positions arising in the general civil service staff are filled according to agreed procedures for promotion.
