Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Interdepartmental Report.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

304 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht whether the Interdepartmental review of the conservation of built heritage has been completed; if so, the date on which it was completed; when it will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16106/96]

I am pleased to state that the report of the interdepartmental working group on strengthening the protection of the architectural heritage has recently been completed and was submitted to myself and to my colleague, the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Howlin, on 21 June 1996 for our consideration. The Government has approved the publication of the report and it is intended that it will be available in September.

Following publication of the report and the debate which I hope will ensue, the Minister for the Environment and I will bring forward specific measures based on the recommendations in the report to give effect to the commitment to improve the protection for listed buildings in the policy agreement for Government of December 1994, entitled A Government of Renewal.
