Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Multilingual Road Signs.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

345 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has to increase the number of multilingual road signs indicating driving on the left hand side of the road in view of the number of road accidents in recent times. [15470/96]

Overall responsibility for the provision of traffic signs on the national roads network is a matter for the National Roads Authority and responsibility for signposting on non-national roads is a matter for each local road authority.

While there is no evidence to suggest that our traffic signing system creates undue difficulties for tourists generally, my Department is developing a standard multilingual sign to advise tourists to drive on the left to replace the various signs which have been provided on an ad hoc basis to date. Details of the new sign will be made available to local authorities within the next two months. The National Safety Council has produced a booklet of traffic rules for the information of visiting drivers. The rule regarding driving on the left is prominently stated.
