Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Helen Keogh

Question:

464 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education whether two teachers (details supplied) in Bishop Galvin national school, Templeogue, Dublin 6, will be retained to honour the commitment previously given by her that the pupil-teacher ratio in all schools in Ireland will drop. [15330/96]

I am committed to reducing the pupil-teacher ratio in primary schools. I would remind the Deputy that since taking office I have reduced the pupil-teacher ratio from 25.2:1 to 22.9:1; and this will be further reduced in the 1996-97 school year. The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment of Bishop Galvin national school on 30 September, 1995 was 475 pupils. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and fifteen assistant teachers for the 1996-97 school year. In addition, the school also has the services of a remedial teacher. Accordingly, the sixteenth and seventeenth assistants' post at the school have been suppressed.
