Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Payments to Contractor.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

480 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education when she proposes to authorise payments to a contractor (details supplied) who completed work for her Department in February 1996 at a school (details supplied) in view of the commitments in respect of the principle of prompt payments made in the programme A Government of Renewal. [15432/96]

Approval was given in September 1993 for the employment of a replacement contractor to complete works which were outstanding at the school in question as a result of non-completion of the building contract by the original contractor. The new contract also included remedial work to the school roofs. All moneys officially approved by the Department in relation to the replacement contract have been paid in full by my Department's building unit. However, payment was sought in respect of additional roof works which were carried out at the school without the prior approval of my Department. The building unit of my Department are involved in ongoing negotiations with the school authorities with a view to resolving this matter and a decision will be made shortly.
