Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Space Requirements for School Construction.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

487 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education the land area required for a post primary school of 400 pupils and 600 pupils; the criteria used in determining space requirements, for example square feet/metres per pupil and the surrounding recreational space needed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15519/96]

The optimum land area of a site for a post primary school of 400 to 600 pupils is eight to 12 acres depending on site conditions. However, when schools are being planned each case is considered individually and the decision is based on a number of factors which include availability, location and cost. The area norm of a new school building or a major extension is calculated on a figure of six square metres per pupil which includes teaching spaces, administration, toilets, social areas and circulation.
