Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Support for Disabled Children.

Mary Wallace

Question:

531 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the level and nature of all supports for children with disabilities who wish to attend mainstream secondary education; and the plans, if any, she has to extend the provision of resource teachers and classroom assistants for such children. [15910/96]

My Department allocates funding for a range of supports provided to children with disabilities attending mainstream education. These include remedial teacher service, resource teachers, visiting teacher service, child care assistants, building modifications, equipment grants, special class capitation grants and school transport provision.

The provision of additional support resources in existing second level schools will be considered in the light of available funding.

I am satisfied that since my appointment as Minister for Education I have achieved substantial progress across the entire spectrum of special needs. It is my intention to continue this process.
