Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prisoners' Age Profile.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

601 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prisoners under the age of 25 years; the total number of prisoners over the age of 25 years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15420/96]

The precise information requested by the Deputy is not readily available. However, the following statistical information on the age profile of those in custody may be of assistance:

On 15 June 1996, of a total population of 2, 182, 545 persons were under 21 years of age, 1,007 persons were over 21 but under 30 years of age and 630 were 30 years of age or over.

Persons in custody under the age of 30 years generally represent about 70 per cent of the total population on any one day.
