602 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the number of female prisoners in Irish prisons; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15422/96]

Female offenders are detained in two institutions: one located at Mountjoy prison and the other at Limerick prison. On Monday, 22 July 1996, 52 female offenders were in custody — 40 in Mountjoy prison and 12 in Limerick prison.
