Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ballymun (Dublin) Garda Station.

Noel Ahern

Question:

615 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the current staffing levels at Ballymun Garda Station, Dublin 11; the staff numbers envisaged when the station was originally planned and erected; the facilities currently available; the criteria under which Garda stations are built; the amounts allocated for construction of stations in each division over the past 15 years; and the reason the north side of Dublin has fared so badly. [15603/96]

The current strength, all ranks, at Ballymun station is 50 members. The number serving when the station was built was around 45. However, the increased level of activity at the station and the need for additional facilities has rendered the existing building inadequate.

The facilities currently available at Ballymun include:

Ground Floor

Parade Room

Male Toilet

Doctor's Room

Public Office

Reception Area

Waiting/Interview Room

Cells (2)

Car Compound

First Floor

Locker Room

Ladies Toilet

Kitchen

District Detective Unit

Det. Sergeant Office

Interview

Warrant/Summons Office

Garda stations are built in compliance with standard briefs of requirements which were agreed by a committee established to review the Garda Building Programme in 1993 on which both Garda management and staff were represented. Priorities are assessed on an annual basis and again the Garda Representative Associations are consulted in this regard.

The information requested to the amounts allocated for construction of Garda stations in each Division over the last 15 years is not readily available as records of expenditure are not maintained on a divisional basis. The total amount allocated this year is £9 million.
I cannot accept that the north side of Dublin has fared less favourably than other areas in terms of the provision of Garda facilities.
