Question:

624 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the number of proceedings issued pursuant to section 5 (3) of the Adoption Act, 1974, in each of the past ten years; and the number of orders made dispensing with the consent of a natural mother to the making of an adoption order; the number of orders made refusing to dispense with the consent of a natural mother; and the number of such orders made on appeal by the Supreme Court in so far as they differ from the original High Court order. The Deputy's question refers to proceedings issued pursuant to section 5 (3) of the Adoption Act, 1974. There is, however, no such subsection in the said Act. Perhaps the Deputy is referring to applications made under section 3 (i) of the 1974 Act, in respect of which statistics are not readily available. Should the Deputy like to clarify the information sought I will endeavour to provide same at a later date.
