Question:

654 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of the measures announced by her on 2 July 1996, to tackle the crime problem; and the anticipated costs over the next two years. [15737/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 646, 652 and 654 together.

The estimated cost of the measures decided upon by the Government on 2 July 1996 is £2.28 million in 1996 and in the region of £35 million in 1997 in relation to the Justice Group of Votes.

The precise costs in relation to 1997 will be published in due course in the context of the Government's consideration of the allocations for 1997 in the Estimates for the Public Service.

There are a number of measures before the House today which are directed towards implementing some of these decisions and I will, in due course, be announcing further details of developments in regard to the measures, and the financing of them.
