Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Offences Committed on Bail.

Ivor Callely

Question:

648 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons charged with an offence while out on bail for another offence from 1 January 1995 to 31 December 1995; the number of detention places which may be required if there is a change in our bail laws; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15731/96]

Statistics on the number of offences committed by persons on bail are published in the Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The 1995 report will be published shortly.

As regards the number of detention places which may be required if there is a change in the bail laws, the Government has approved my proposal to build a new remand prison capable of holding 400 prisoners on the enclosed site already available at Wheatfield.
