Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Retirement Age.

Ivor Callely

Question:

650 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice whether the Garda retirement age is to be extended by five years; if so, the total numbers in each rank that could remain in the Garda force; the mechanism required for such an extension to be granted; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15733/96]

There are no proposals to extend the Garda retirement age by five years. In regard to the general question of the extension of the retirement age, the position has remained unchanged since my reply to the Deputy's Parliamentary Questions 9850/96 and 9851/96 on 15 May 1996.
