Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Resources.

Ivor Callely

Question:

655 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice her views on whether the Gardaí have been given the necessary resources in order to offer the general public full and adequate protection at all times and in every situation. [15738/96]

As I outlined in my response to the Deputy's previous question in this matter, I am satisfied that the Garda Síochána have the necessary personnel and resources to enable them to meet the demands placed on them. However, as I also stated in my previous response to the Deputy, this is something which must be kept under continuous review and changes made as deemed necessary.

The actual deployment of these resources is a matter for the Garda Commissioner and, of course, I am guided by his operational knowledge and expertise in such matters. Many factors influence the recruitment and allocation of the Garda Síochána such as demographic change and crime tends. These trends are continually monitored and measures adopted where necessary to counter any difficulties which may arise.
The anti-crime measures which i announced recently, having obtained Government approval, are a continuation of the ongoing commitment to the fight against crime. These proposals are in addition to the other major initiatives which I have already introduced since taking up appointment as Minister for Justice and are testament to my determination and that of the Government to tackle crime in a swift and effective manner.
