Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Media Briefings on Garda Murder.

Mary Harney

Question:

657 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the briefings, if any, given by the Government Press Secretary to the media in the wake of the murder of Garda McCabe and the attempted murder of Garda O'Sullivan in Adare on Friday, 7 June 1996. [13622/96]

I understand that the Government Press Secretary did not give any media briefings in this matter and that press queries were redirected to the Garda Press Office. When the then Garda Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Culligan announced on 13 June 1996 that a unit of the IRA was responsible for the murder of Garda McCabe and the wounding of Garda O'Sullivan, the Press Secretary confirmed that the Government considered the Commissioner's announcement as authoritative and definitive.
