Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Deferred Release of Prisoner.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

680 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the reason the release of a person (details supplied) is not now going ahead in view of a previous letter from her dated 21 July 1995 in this regard which stated that he would be released in 12 months from that date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15842/96]

The prisoner in question is serving a life sentence for the murder in 1984 of a member of the Garda Síochána. His sentence is indeterminate and, subject to the approval of the Minister, he may be released under licence at any time. It would not be appropriate for me to comment on the decision to defer his planned release date of July 1996. The giving of such information in relation to an individual offender would be unprecedented.
