Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Provision of Medical Service to Prison.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

690 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the current status of the negotiations between her Department and the Irish Medical Organisation in relation to a common contract to provide medical services to a prison which have been ongoing since 1992; the progress, if any, that has been made in this matter since the Parliamentary Question raised by Deputy O'Donnell of 19 June 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15969/96]

Since I set out the position in relation to this matter in my response to parliamentary questions to Deputy Quill on 19 June 1996, and to Deputy O'Donnell on 2 July 1996, I have had discussions with the law officers on certain aspects of the proposed contract and as soon as their formal advice is available to me it will be considered by my Department and the Department of Finance and further discussions will be take place with the IMO. I hope these discussions may bring this issue to a conclusion.
