Ivor Callely

Question:

695 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice further to her reply to a parliamentary question raised by Deputy Callely on 15 May 1996, regarding the new women's prison on the Cowley Place site beside Mountjoy Prison, wherein she indicated that planning and related matters are being processed, the stage of process of these matters; and the likely date for completion of this project. [16142/96]

On 2 July this year I obtained Government approval for the necessary capital funding to enable the construction works for the new women's prison at Cowley Place, near Mountjoy, which will provide 60 extra prison places, to begin in January 1997. The project is due for completion in 1998.
