Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pigs and Poultry Antibiotics.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

833 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will provide accurate figures of the total amount of antibiotics fed to pigs and poultry in Ireland in each of the years from 1990 to 1995; if he will provide a breakdown of the types and volumes of particular antibiotics fed to pigs and poultry during this period; and the antibiotics that continue to be administered to healthy farm animals in view of the fact that the Swedish Department of Agriculture banned their use in 1986, except on veterinary prescription. [15057/96]

The information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department. Since 1986, antibiotics for therapeutic purposes may be administered only on foot of a veterinary prescription. However, certain antibiotics, which are authorised throughout the EU as medicinal additives, may be administered without prescription in accordance with EU Feed Additives Directives.

The Swedish ban to which the Deputy refers is a derogation provided for in that country's Act of Accession and is due to expire at the end of 1998.

Question:

834 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether a minimum value order exists to regulate the live export of equine animals; and if so, the minimum value involved. [15058/96]

There are no minimum value provisions applicable to the export of equine animals from Ireland.
