Question:

840 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total number of hectares of the national base area which was under-utilised in each of the years from 1994 to 1996. [15113/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 837 and 840 together. The national base area unused for crop years 1994 and 1995 was 44,622 hectares and 38,482 hectares respectively.

The numbers of applicants for arable aid under the general and simplified schemes for 1994 and 1995 were as follows:

General Scheme

Simplified Scheme

1994

3,770

12,024

1995

3,806

11,950

The 1996 applications are currently being processed and details requested are not yet available.
