Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Price Waterhouse Report.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

943 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the contacts, if any, he has had with the management and board of An Post in relation to the Price Waterhouse Consultant's Study on the company; and if he has satisfied himself with the progress on implementation of the report. [15994/96]

As I indicated in my reply to the Deputy's question of 28 May 1996 An Post, at my request, carried out a review of the role, method of operation and effectiveness of the conmpany. An Post appointed independent consultants Price Waterhouse whose report contained over 400 recommendations. The implementation of these recommendations is, however, a day to day matter for An Post.

Question:

944 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he has satisfied himself with the performance of An Post management in view of the number of ongoing difficulties with the postal system and with industrial relations at the company; the estimated cost of postal disruption to the economy; and the plans, if any, he has to improve the situation at An Post. [15995/96]

The Price Waterhouse report on An Post, which was commissioned on my initiative, made a number of recommendations about management and human resources issues. This report was approved by the board which is proceeding with implementation of the recommendations.

I am pleased that the threatened disruption at the Dublin Mails Centre did not materialise and that the Labour Relations Commission will undertake an immediate review of industrial relations practices at the DMC.

I am not in a position to give any estimates of costs to the economy arising from disruption in the postal sector.
