Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Airborne Radar Operators.

Noel Ahern

Question:

954 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Defence the wages and conditions of airborne radar operators on CASA, fishery protection, rescue and drug tracking flights; the reason they are still not in receipt of duty payments or technical pay, are on a low rate of flying time pay after two years of operation and promises and expenditure of a new salary scale have not been agreed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15555/96]

Personnel in the rank of private, corporal and flight sergeant are employed on airborne sensor radar operator duties and are paid the rates of regimental pay and military service allowance appropriate to their rank and service. They are also paid flying pay allowance at the lower rate. Airborne sensor radar operator duties do not qualify for the payment of security duty allowance. The question of the rate of flying pay allowance and the payment of technician pay to airborne sensor radar operators has been raised by the permanent Defence Force Other Ranks Representative Association under the terms of the conciliation and arbitration scheme. Under the terms of the scheme, as agreed with the association, discussions on claims which are being processed are confidential. The Deputy will appreciate, therefore, that as the matter is under active consideration at present it would not be appropriate for me to comment further at this time.
