Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Civilian Employee.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

956 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Defence if he will have arrangements made for a further review in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath who is a civilian employee in his Department; whether this civilian employee is subject to the Official Secrets Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16006/96]

Since January 1992, representations have been received in the office of the Minister for Defence on 21 separate occasions from or on behalf of the person referred to and in relation to a diverse range of personal complaints and alleged grievances. These various representations have all been thoroughly and comprehensively investigated by local military management and by my Department. Formal responses have been issued both by me and by my predecessors in office. The complaints and allegations have been consistently shown to be without foundation.

No productive or useful purpose would now be served by resort to any further retrospective reviews of these unfounded allegations. Civilian employees with the Defence Forces, in common with other State industrial employees, are bound by the Official Secrets Act. However, that would not appear to be a factor of any relevance or significance in this case.
