Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Freight Landing Charges.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

975 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine if he will list the freight landing charges for ports in counties Donegal, Sligo and Galway. [15369/96]

Under the Harbours Act, 1946 the Minister for the Marine may approve harbour rates for harbours scheduled under the said Act. Rates approved usually cover tonnage and traffic charges. Sligo, Galway and the ports at Killybegs, Buncrana and Ballyshannon in County Donegal are scheduled harbours. I am arranging for copies of the harbour rates orders in operation at present for harbours in the counties listed above — there are none for Ballyshannon — to be sent to the Deputy. There is virtually no commercial traffic handled at present by the ports of Buncrana and Ballyshannon, while Killybegs is primarily a fishing port.

In addition to these charges there are the stevedoring or cargo handling charges associated with the loading/unloading of cargo. These are negotiated locally between shippers/ users and the stevedoring company. The stevedores at the above ports are private companies and I have no details of these charges.
