Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Civil Service Reinstatement.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

85 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Finance if he will review the case of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath who seeks reinstatement in the Civil Service in view of the fact that this reinstatement is requested on economic and social grounds. [15221/96]

As the woman concerned did not satisfy the necessary criteria as laid down in section 11 of the Civil Service Regulation Act, 1956, as amended by the Civil Service (Employment of Married Women) Act, 1973, her application for reinstatement to the Civil Service was not successful. This information was conveyed by my Department to her former parent Department in April 1994.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the statutory provisions for the reinstatement to their former positions of women who resigned from the civil service for marriage-related reasons and who fulfilled specific criteria, have recently been repealed by the Oireachtas. The commencement order was signed by me on 25 June 1996.

In the context of this repeal, it is intended that the next two series of clerical assistant and executive officer competitions to be held by the Civil Service Commission will include special sub-panels which will be composed solely of former civil servants. It is hoped that this initiative will go some way towards facilitating the re-entry to the civil service of women, such as the woman in question, who resigned on marriage.
