187 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health the funding made to St. Vincent's Hospital, Navan Road, Dublin 7, for residential care in 1996; and if he intends to increase the funding in 1997 in view of the urgent need in this regard. [16189/96]
The Daughters of Charity services provide day and residential services for people with a mental handicap in St. Vincent's Centre, Navan Road, Dublin 7. Funding for the centre is provided by the Department as part of a block allocation to the Order in respect of services provided at a number of locations in Dublin and at Lisnagry, Limerick. The allocation of this funding between individual centres such as St. Vincent's Centre and particular elements of service within these centres is at the discretion of the Order.
The 1996 allocation to the Order was £21.040 million. In addition, the Order was allocated funding of £60,000 — full year costs — to facilitate the provision of additional day places in the Eastern Health Board area in 1996.
As the question of the overall allocation to my Department in 1996 is still under consideration, I am not in a position to give any indication of the level of funding for services for persons with a mental handicap in 1997.
