Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Western Health Board Appointments.

Michael Ring

Question:

195 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health the number of permanent positions that were filled in the Western Health Board in County Mayo in each of the years from 1994 to 1996; the number of applicants who were made permanent from the temporary staff; the number who are on the panels; and if there is a policy within the health board not to recruit from the temporary staff. [16287/96]

Limerick East): The Western Health Board is responsible for the management of services and deployment of staff in its own area, including County Mayo.

The number of permanent appointments made by the board, in County Mayo, in the years specified, is as follows:

1994

51

1995

98

1996

61

It is not the policy of the board to discriminate against temporary staff when filling permanent vacancies. Temporary staff may apply for any permanent positions advertised, and many temporary staff have been successful in these competitions.
The number of temporary staff who have been placed on permanent panels in County Mayo is not readily available because, although some panels are specific to institutions in County Mayo alone, most panels apply to the wider health board area.
