Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Austin Deasy

Question:

283 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health if he will assist a person (details supplied) in County Waterford who is a medical card holder and has been waiting two years for a double bypass heart operation to ensure that the operation is carried out as soon as possible. [17000/96]

Limerick East): I understand the person in question is on the cardiac surgery waiting list and at this time the hospital concerned is not able to give an exact admission date. The scheduling of cardiac surgery is a matter for the consultant concerned, is based solely on the patient's condition and not on the length of time on the waiting list. Emergency cases are given priority. I would draw the Deputy's attention again to the central role of the patient's general practitioner who would be in the best position to highlight the case to the consultant concerned.
