Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage Report.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

302 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will give a definite time frame for the introduction of legislation in relation to the recently published report Strengthening the Protection of the Architectural Heritage and the commitments in the programme for Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16945/96]

I was very pleased to publish last week the report of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Strengthening the Protection of the Architectural Heritage so that those who have an interest in this issue may comment on the recommendations. My colleague the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Howlin and I will be bringing forward to Government without delay a package of specific financial, administrative, and legislative proposals based on the recommendations in the report.

In bringing forward such a package of proposals, it is intended to take into account any observations received in response to the recommendations in the report. It is not possible at this time to give the Deputy a definite timeframe for legislation. However, work is proceeding immediately to address the issues identified in the report, and a package of proposals will be submitted to Government as soon as possible.
