314 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received representations requesting changes to be made to the local government superannuation scheme for health board and other local government employees, particularly in relation to the compulsory nature of the scheme and the need to invest the money involved; if he has satisfied himself with this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While I receive representations from time to time regarding various aspects of the local government superannuation scheme. I have had no approaches in relation to the specific issues referred to in the question.
In line with other public sector pension schemes, membership of the local government superannuation scheme is compulsory for all permanent and wholetime officers and for all employees other than those employed on a casual basis. Members' contributions are treated as part of their employing authorities' current revenues and retirement benefits are paid out as current expenditure. The question of investing the money involved does not therefore arise.
