Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Connemara (Galway) Environmental Project.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

335 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for the Environment when a decision will be made on the Connemara environmental project in view of the critical water problem in Connemara and the Aran Islands; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16442/96]

An application was submitted to the European Commission under stage 1 of the Connemara Environment Project for Cohesion Fund assistance for the planning and construction of the Spiddal-Rossaveal and Aran Islands water supply schemes. My Department has emphasised the urgency of this application and continues to press for its approval. Pending the Commission's decision and having regard to the existing high level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve these schemes.
