Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cycle Ways Authorisation.

Noel Ahern

Question:

340 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the reason he will not authorise cycle ways on all new major roadways or motorways in or near urban centres; the regulations, if any, EU or otherwise, against doing so; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16501/96]

Section 68 of the Roads Act, 1993, empowers road authorities to construct or provide cycle ways. The development of proposals for cycle ways is a matter for individual road authorities, in conjunction with the National Roads Authority in the case of national roads. Road authorities are also empowered, under the Road Traffic Acts, to provide cycle tracks as part of existing public roads — except motorways.
