Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Litter Unit.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

378 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the progress, if any, made in relation to the setting up of a separate unit in his Department to deal with litter; the number and grades of staff; the remit and work plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16964/96]

A separate anti-litter unit was established in my Department in 1995 to plan and implement the Action Against Litter initiative which commenced earlier this year. The principal operational task of this unit is to implement and build on the overall strategy for this initiative which I set out in my policy statement of 12 February 1996. The unit is staffed by an assistant principal officer, a staff officer and a clerical assistant/typist. In addition, assistance is provided by the Department's Environment inspectorate and by other staff of the Department on an ongoing basis as required. The unit also avails of appropriate consultancy services.
