Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - PLC Grant Support.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

391 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education if she will provide higher education grants for the security management course in Dún Laoghaire Community College, County Dublin; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16278/96]

Dún Laoghaire community college provides a post leaving certificate course in security management. It is provided outside the third level sector and, consequently, students are not eligible for grant support under the terms of the third level grants schemes.

To provide a scheme for PLC students along the lines of the third level scheme would cost in excess of £10 million per annum. My Department is already providing over £35 million this year towards the running costs of PLC courses, including a provision for the abolition of course fees.

Due to overall resource constraints I am unable to provide grant support for PLC students.
