Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Sports Hall.

Mary Harney

Question:

401 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to allocate funds for a sports hall for Pobal-Scoil Iosolde, Palmerstown, Dublin 20 in view of the fact that this basic facility is urgently needed at this school which caters for teenagers from both Palmerstown and Ballyfermot; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16323/96]

The question of providing physical education facilities at Pobail Scoil Iosolde, Palmerstown, Dublin 20 can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally. Because of the huge demand for additional classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country, I am not in a position at this stage to say when physical education facilities will be provided in this particular case.

However, the school authorities have recently put forward a proposal involving the joint provision of a sports facility at the school with a local community group. This proposal is being examined by the Department at present.
