Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Carbon Energy Tax.

Robert Molloy

Question:

48 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Finance the current position regarding the EU proposal to introduce a carbon energy tax. [12427/96]

It has not proved possible to reach agreement on the original proposals for an EU tax on carbon/energy. In March of this year, the ECO/FIN Council agreed to ask the Commission to bring forward revised proposals dealing with carbon/energy taxation. It is expected that proposals will be presented by the Commission late in the year concerning energy taxation, probably as part of a comprehensive set of proposals relating to mineral oil excise. It is possible that discussion of the excise proposals at working group level will only commence in December or January depending on the timing of the proposal from the Commission.
