Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Galway School Facilities.

Noel Treacy

Question:

440 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the serious lack of facilities at a location (details supplied) in County Galway; the reason her Department has not provided these facilities over the years; her views regarding physical education both nationally and locally; if she will make adequate resources available to ensure that these facilities are provided in this large area; the date on which this will be done; the amount of money to be allocated; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16710/96]

It is the policy of my Department to provide GP facilities for all new national schools with four or more classrooms. Physical education facilities are provided on a phased basis at all second-level schools where such facilities are not already available.

The principal factor which determines progress in this area is the amount of capital funding available each year. Given the limited resources available, the priority will continue to be the provision of essential classroom accommodation. In the circumstances, I am not in a position to give an undertaking to provide these facilities at the schools mentioned by the Deputy.
