Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Wexford Schools.

John Browne

Question:

448 Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the situation at St. Aidan's primary school, Enniscorthy, County Wexford where teachers and parents are concerned that remedial works agreed with her Department during the amalgamation of Enniscorthy CBS and the Presentation primary school have not been completed after two years; the reason for the delay; and when these works will be completed. [16873/96]

Improvement works have been carried out on a continuous basis at this school over the past two years. Of the works agreed, there are two major jobs which have yet to be completed. These jobs have been incorporated into one project which was included in the 1996 Capital Programme. The work involves major refurbishment of the electrical system and window replacement.

The decision to include the school in the programme must be seen as the beginning of the process involving surveying of the school building, preparation of design drawings, contract documentation, tender and contract. A decision on the timing of the tender process will be taken in the light of expenditure on existing contractual commitments and other priority projects. It is not possible at this stage to indicate when the project will proceed to tender. The Department will keep in touch with the school management in this matter.
