488 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice the number of requests for parole for family events, illnesses and deaths received from Republican prisoners in Portlaoise prison in each month during 1995 and up to August 1996; the number of such requests granted each month during this period; the number of these requests which were received from non-aligned Republican prisoners; and the number of such requests granted in respect of each month in this period. The number of requests for compassionate parole received from and granted to all subversive prisoners from January 1995 to August 1996 are as follows:

The full restoration of the parole arrangements which existed immediately prior to the resumption of violence on 9 February last is something which will fall to be considered in the event of the ceasefire being restored.
In the meantime, the position is that each parole application is considered on its merits.
