Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Speeding in Urban Areas.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

494 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to improve enforcement of the policy on speeding in urban areas; and the number of times speed traps have been placed on Strand Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4, over the past three years. [16531/96]

I can assure the Deputy that the enforcement of road traffic legislation in relation to speeding is given high priority by the Garda and the Garda are adequately resourced and have the most up-to-date speed detection equipment available for the purpose.

The main equipment used by the Garda at present are hand held radar and in car video units. The Garda also recently acquired the GATSO system which is a sophisticated combined camera/radar/computer speed detection unit. It is the most advanced technology in speeding detection equipment available to the Garda Síochána. It is programmed to record the location, speed and registration numbers of the offending vehicle.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the gardaí have mounted 28 speed traps during the past three years on Strand Road, Sandymount. A number of prosecutions have been initiated as a result of these checks. I also understand that Dublin Corporation agreed to provide a continuous white line on a portion of the roadway to deter vehicles from overtaking.
