Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Accidents.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

515 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice if her Department retains detailed accounts of the nature of road traffic accidents, such as the number of accidents, the causes or possible causes, the number of people involved and the resulting fatalities; and whether she will supply this information in respect of Beach Road and Strand Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4, in respect of each of the years from 1994 to date in 1996. [16850/96]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that statistics regarding road traffic accidents are not compiled by them in such a way as to readily provide the details which the Deputy requests. The information sought is not retained by my Department.

All road traffic accidents are recorded by each Garda station. Copies of the special accident report forms are forwarded directly to the National Roads Authority, which forwards details to each local authority for the area where the accident occurred. A detailed annual report on road accidents statistics is prepared and published by the National Roads Authority.
