Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Tony Gregory

Question:

530 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the additional 12 months arrears of child allowance will be paid to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 in view of the exceptional circumstances. [16172/96]

The person concerned claimed disability benefit from 15 July 1994. She was paid at the personal rate on the basis of details supplied by her which did not include an application for an increase in respect of a child dependant. While the child was born in May 1994, an application for an increase in benefit was not received until 11 July 1996. The rate of disability benefit payable was increased to include half rate child dependant effective from 11 July 1996.

Under social welfare legislation, retrospective payment of child dependant increases is limited to a period of six months prior to the date of receipt of application. Accordingly, payment was authorised for a six month period from 11 January 1996 to 10 July 1996. A cheque amounting to £172.70 was issued on 17 July 1996.

I have asked that the case be reviewed in the light of the circumstances referred to and I will write to the Deputy when the review is completed.
