553 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total numbers on the live register on 1 January 1995, 1 January 1996 and 1 September 1996. [16763/96]

In the period January 1995 until August 1996, there were 552,778 inflows into the live register with 545,363 outflows from the live register.

My Department's records show that up to 30,000 people on the live register at any given time are casual and part-time workers who are partially unemployed.
Departmental records for the period January 1996 to July 1996 show the following previous history details for people coming on to the live register: working full time — employment terminated, 58.5 per cent; receiving disability benefit or other social welfare payment, 9.8 per cent; returned emigrant 9.6 per cent; community employment or other FÁS scheme, 6.6 per cent; school or college, 5.7 per cent; home duties, 0.8 per cent and other, 9.0 per cent.
