Question:

586 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the on-going industrial relations problems regarding the Aer Lingus cabin crew and the failure at Aer Lingus management to adhere to recent Labour Court recommendations concerning British Caledonian flights; if he will intervene in this dispute; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16585/96]

The resolution of industrial disputes is a matter for the parties directly concerned. In those circumstances where parties require assistance to help them resolve their differences, the services of the dispute settling agencies of the State are available. I have full confidence in the professionalism of the officials of the Labour Relations Commission and the Labour Court. Any direct intervention or substantive comment on my part would only usurp the functions of those agencies. I understand that the parties have availed of the services of the Labour Court in regard to the staffing arrangements of the aircraft hired from British Caledonian Airways.

However, I would like to inform the House that following intervention by the Labour Court substantive progress has been made in terms of a resolution of the difficulties referred to by the Deputy.
