Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Cavan Employment.

Brendan Smith

Question:

649 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the progress, if any, that has been made by his Department and the State development agencies in assisting the resumption of employment at a company (details supplied) in County Cavan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17002/96]

Since the closure of the company concerned, Forbairt has been in continuous contact with management at the plant. I understand from Forbairt that the most recent meeting with the company was held this week, at which worthwhile discussions took place on ways to overcome the current problems. Forbairt have put a number of suggestions to the company for the viable recommencement of trading. The full resources of Forbairt have been placed at the disposal of the company, and my Department is monitoring the situation.

The Deputy will understand that it is not open to me to get involved directly in this matter, given that it was a commercial decision by the company to cease operations. Therefore the resumption of activities at the plant is ultimately a commercial decision for the company.
